However, some questions are not only unsuitable due to a lack of relevance, but are also absolutely taboo and unlawful, as they may violate ethical standards or infringe on privacy. It is of crucial importance to shape the dialogue in a way that remains constructive and free from discrimination or personal intrusion. Certain topics should therefore be consciously avoided in order to safeguard the integrity of the meeting and strengthen the relationship between employer and employee.    <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Here are the most important taboo questions that should under no circumstances be asked during an employee meeting:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#1 Family planning<\/h2>\n\n<p>Of course, family planning can to a certain extent affect work and have some influence. However, this has nothing to do with performance and work itself. Strictly speaking, questions in this direction fall under the category of \u201cprivate life\u201d and are therefore unlawful during an employee meeting, such as the following examples:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are you planning to have children in the near future?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How might your family planning affect your professional ambitions?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are you currently pregnant?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Would you consider returning to full-time work after the birth of a child?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>An employee can and does not have to answer such questions and may even lie if there is a fear of discrimination. However, there is one exception: as soon as an employee becomes aware of her pregnancy, she is obliged to inform her employer. This does not mean, however, that such a question is appropriate.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2 Sexual orientation<\/h2>\n\n<p>As a general rule, in a professional environment, including the workplace, no questions should be asked about partnerships, sexual orientation, or similar matters. On the one hand, leaders must respect the privacy of employees, and on the other hand, such questions may be perceived as discriminatory. These include, among others:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are you currently living in a partnership?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are you homosexual, lesbian, bi-, heterosexual or do you identify with another sexual orientation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How does your family feel about your sexual orientation?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#3 Sick leave<\/h2>\n\n<p>As long as there is no direct and noticeable impact on work performance due to the health condition of an employee, inadmissible questions about it should in any case also be avoided. Because even if the employer has a sincere interest in the well-being of an employee, questions like those listed below can again be taken up as discriminatory. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do you have health problems that affect us as a company?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How often were you on sick leave in the last year?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is it possible to obtain a list of your previous illnesses and their duration?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are your sick days associated with specific health problems?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why were you recently sick for several weeks?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How often do you plan to be sick this year?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When was the last time you had a preventive medical check-up?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Could it be that your dietary habits have an impact on your sick days?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Furthermore, as a manager it is important to know that the type of illness falls under data protection. The question about it is therefore not only inadmissible, but also carries the risk that an employee is put in an awkward position and is treated and regarded differently by oneself as well as by colleagues and is therefore to be treated confidentially. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#4 Distinguishing private and working life<\/h2>\n\n<p>A positive working relationship between employer and employee is of course always advantageous. However, as a boss one must nevertheless know the boundaries and should not mix too much work with private matters. Especially in an employee meeting, it should primarily be about work. Therefore, as a manager, in an inappropriate setting one should also not resort to these inadmissible questions:   <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What do you do in your free time?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you do sports?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How much time do you spend on your hobbies?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you live beyond your means?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What does your current financial situation look like? Are you in debt? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you have part-time activities or side jobs?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How often do you go out in the evening and take part in social events?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you consume alcohol, drugs or other addictive substances?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Here as well it again applies that an employee does not have to answer any such question and in this case, as a manager, one should pay attention to whether some of such topics are brought up in an informal conversation during the lunch break or in an official employee meeting.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#5 Religion<\/h2>\n\n<p>Another topic that absolutely has no place in an employee meeting is religion. This can often be an extremely delicate matter that can quickly be misunderstood, which is why one should not offer such situations any breeding ground in the first place. Therefore, as long as an employee does not bring up this topic on their own, the following questions should not arise during an employee meeting:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which religion do you belong to?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do you practice your faith?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does your religion have an influence on your availability for certain working days or times, due to holidays that are not legally recognized?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you take part in religious events during working hours?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is your attitude toward colleagues of other religious beliefs?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#6 Political views<\/h2>\n\n<p>It is similar with political matters. In view of the fact that political convictions are deeply rooted in personal values and beliefs and can often evoke strong emotions, there is here another high risk of misunderstandings and conflicts. It is therefore advisable to avoid this type of discussions and questions in a professional context:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which political party do you support?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How would you describe your political orientation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you belong to an association or a political organization?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are your views on the current political discussions and developments?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have you taken part in political demonstrations?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which political magazines or newspapers do you read?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#7 Ethical views<\/h2>\n\n<p>Ethical convictions may shape personality and decisions, however they also do not belong in the foreground in an employee meeting, especially if they do not directly concern the work. Here are some examples of questions that intrude too deeply into personal ethical views and therefore should not arise in a professional context: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which ethical principles do you represent and which do you reject?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How would you behave in a morally questionable situation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are there ethical convictions that could prevent you from taking on certain tasks with us?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have you ever violated the company\u2019s ethical guidelines?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can you name an example in which you placed your ethical convictions above company policy?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are you a vegetarian, vegan or meat eater?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the reason for your dietary decision based on health-related or ethical aspects?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you believe that your dietary habits can influence your work performance?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#8 \u201cUnprofessional\u201d questions<\/h2>\n\n<p>For a successful employee meeting, it is also crucial that the boss generally presents themselves professionally and is prepared. Consequently, one should not resort to generalizations, not ambush the employee with a question in which they look bad, and not ask for facts that one as a manager should normally, especially due to appropriate preparation for the employee meeting, be aware of. In other words, these inadmissible questions should likewise not occur:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is that really your best performance?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can you make more effort in the future?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Did you not listen at all last time?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How often do you go to the toilet during working hours?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reden Sie w\u00e4hrend der Arbeitszeit \u00fcber private Angelegenheiten und Probleme?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is the opinion of your colleagues about you in private?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which of your colleagues do you personally like the least?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">These are therefore things one should take into account as a manager in employee meetings.<\/h2>\n\n<p>The careful selection of topics and questions in employee meetings is crucial for maintaining a respectful and professional working environment. Inadmissible questions that intrude into privacy, violate ethical standards or can appear discriminatory should be consistently avoided. It is about creating an environment in which all employees feel valued and treated fairly, regardless of their personal situation, convictions or way of life.
